Experian Boost: 5-Year Redesign

A milestone redesign celebrating Boost's 5 years in market — modernizing performance, scalability, and user experience

Overview

To mark Boost's 5th anniversary, we undertook a comprehensive redesign of one of Experian's flagship consumer products. The initiative modernized Boost's architecture and visual identity, improved page load times across all screens, and introduced the ECS Atlas design system to align Boost with Experian's broader product ecosystem. The redesign launched at 10% exposure on June 6, 2024, before ramping to full 100% rollout by August 2024.

The Challenge

After five years in production, Boost's codebase and design had accumulated significant technical and visual debt. Page load times were drifting away from the 5-second load requirement, and the product's UI no longer reflected Experian's evolving brand standards. The existing architecture also limited the team's ability to add new goals, personalization capabilities, and product features without extensive rework.

Additionally, mobile web users — a growing segment — experienced a suboptimal experience that needed dedicated optimization.

Solution & Design

The redesign centered on three pillars: performance, scalability, and brand cohesion.

  • Significantly reduced page load time across all Boost screens, moving closer to the 5-second load requirement
  • Integrated ECS Atlas components to modernize and unify Boost's visual language with the broader Experian site
  • Optimized specifically for mobile web users to provide a seamless, conversion-driven experience
  • Rebuilt the architecture to support future goals, personalization features, intelligence capabilities, and tracking integrations
  • Established a scalable design foundation enabling faster iteration and opportunities to innovate across the product

Launch & Rollout

The redesign followed a controlled, phased rollout to monitor quality and performance at each exposure threshold before ramping further.

  • 10% exposure — Thursday, June 6, 2024
  • 20% exposure — Friday, June 7, 2024
  • 50% exposure — Monday, June 10, 2024 (accelerated early after strong initial signals)
  • 10% exposure — Monday, June 17, 2024 (temporarily held to coordinate with Proactive Opt-in release)
  • 100% exposure — Thursday, August 8, 2024

An early read from the Boost Outcome Placements at 10% exposure showed Total CTR of 2.51% for Redesign ON vs. 1.40% for Redesign OFF, providing confidence to accelerate the ramp.

Impact & Results

At full 100% exposure, the Boost Redesign delivered meaningful improvements across key product metrics:

  • 150% increase in CTR on other products' placements within Boost pages
  • 6% increase in Boost complete rate
  • Similar Finicity connection start rate maintained — no regression in core funnel
  • Similar FI (financial institution) added rate — core reliability preserved
  • Aligned Boost's visual identity with Experian's design standards via ECS Atlas adoption

Enhancements

Following the full rollout, the team shipped an additional enhancement on August 22, 2024, responding directly to one of the most consistent user feedback themes: users wanting to understand how Boost has helped them over time.

  • Introduced a Boost Historical View — users can now see when they've added or removed bills and the associated dates
  • Designed as a foundation to eventually surface FICO score point changes tied to each bill addition or removal
  • Serves as a re-engagement driver, bringing Boost consumers back to Experian and guiding them toward other D2C areas
